PRE-INSTALL
QUESTIONS for Server Installs
1.
Is the data being backed up by other backup
software (tape backup, etc…)?
If so make sure that you run e-Backups prior
to the other backup software. You will also
need to change the default setting in the
e-Backups software so that it does not clear
the archive flag after running.
View,
Options, Backup – DESELECT “Clear
the archive flag on files that are backed
up.”
This
will allow e-Backups to run, backup the files
and then leave the archive flag set so that
the additional software can backup the files
that have changed.
2. Are you backing up large files
greater than 200MB? If so you will
probably want to increase the file size that
FastBit will be performed on. By default the
software is setup to only perform FastBit
on files that are less than or equal to 200MB’s.
You can change this setting by going to:
View,
Options, Backup, Backup, – Under the
FastBit section select the FastBit Options
button and change the setting from 200MB to
500MB. This is the file size ceiling that
you can currently perform FastBit on.
A
proper setting here will eliminate problems
with long backups and the storage vault growing
more quickly than necessary. Otherwise, if
the file is larger than this setting, a full
backup of the file is necessary.
3. Review how much total data needs
to be backed up? It is important
to make note of the total amount of data to
be protected. In some instances it will make
sense to spread the first backup over several
days, rather than selecting all of the directories
on day 1. For instance, if you have 10GB’s
to backup over an ADSL line with 128k upstream,
you should start with a reasonable amount
of data selected. Let’s say 2 GB’s.
Let this run overnight and complete. Day 2
Open the same backup set and select an additional
group of directories (2GB’s) to be included
in this backup set. It may take several days
to get all of the data off-site but once the
entire volume has been transferred, the subsequent
backups will work fine.
4.
What types of files are being backed up?
Depending on the file type, be conscious of
the file being left open during backup. For
instance, Outlook, Outlook Express and other
common programs such as Quicken are inadvertently
left open sometimes by not closing the application
properly.
5.
Determine your Email settings. If
you are planning on using the email notification
option in the software, you will need your:
mail server, email address (must be a valid
email on this mail server), and username/password
if the mail setup requires password authentification.
NOTE: Try the setup without username/password
first. Depending on the setup this may not
be necessary for some users.
6.
Identify what data is important before you
set up the service. For many users
finding the important data is 90% of the battle.
You may need to check with others to determine
exactly what is important and needs to be
backed up.
7.
Setup e-Backups to run as a "service"
Install this option so that backups can run
without any users logged in.
